Best Museums in Chicago

Whether you are visiting Chicago alone on business or for a family weekend away, there is so much to see and discover at the city’s world-class museums and galleries. Check out our pick of the best below.

  • Field Museum of Natural History

Established in 1893 in order to house many of the collections exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago that same year, the museum is still a top attraction for a whole variety of visitors and aims to inspire curiosity about the natural world. The museum houses a huge collection of permanent exhibitions, from the breath-taking “Hall of Gems”, to “Ancient Egypt” (including over 20 mummies!), to a unique “Underground Adventure” where you can explore the world from a bugs-eye view. There are daily events and ever-changing special exhibitions, including the immersive Jurassic World exhibition (running until January 7th, 2018), which allows visitors to get closer to dinosaurs than ever before.

  • Art Institute of Chicago

This impressive gallery houses a huge collection of artwork from all over the world, with almost a million square feet of exhibition space to enjoy and explore. Famous pieces such as Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday on La Grand Jatte” and Claude Monet’s “Stack of Wheat” series provide big-name draws, but visitors can also discover unusual attractions such as the Thorn Miniature Rooms, which contain intricate and painstakingly-created miniature reproductions of 17th – 20th century houses, cathedrals, and palaces. As the most recent addition to the building, the light and airy Modern Wing is almost a piece of artwork in itself, and houses works from the likes of Magritte, Dali, and Picasso.

  • Museum of Science and Industry

This impressive building houses a diverse range of exhibits, with something to fascinate and amaze every age. Descend into a coalmine, climb aboard a U-505 World War II submarine, or go on a scientific adventure in the dome theater – an immersive, wraparound, five-story movie theater experience. Special exhibitions include “Brick by Brick” which runs until January 7th and features some of the world’s most famous structures recreated with Lego, and even offers visitors the chance to get hands-on with their own building challenges. “Robot Revolution”, running until February 4th, is a collection of the coolest robots from around the world, offering visitors the chance to meet and interact with incredible cutting-edge technology.

  • Museum of Contemporary Art

This impressive museum, established in 1967 but in its current Near North Side community location since 1996, is one of the largest contemporary art museums in the world. The gallery features a wide variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions of post-World War II visual art, and contains works by many noted artists such as Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, Jasper Johns, and Kara Walker, as well as renowned local artists as part of its “Chicago Works” series of special exhibitions.
